Truth When You Need It

Too often folks act because they think they are supposed to - supposed to love, supposed to study their Bible, etc., supposed to go to church, supposed to discipline someone or supposed to not discipline! etc.

This all indicates a state of weakness, a state of belief, not understanding. It shuts out spiritual sense, that inner voice that would guide us honestly. For this reason, doing things because we are supposed to cultivates dishonesty.

"Surely, if I do good for others, that is enough!" Apparently not. "Though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing." (I Cor. 13) The charity referred to here has no because-I-am-supposed-to attached to it. This charity is synonymous with the spirituality referenced in the following:

“Spirituality is the only Christianity; and its basis is, 'to be absent from the body and present with the Lord;' sensuality is personality ever present with the body. We have already sufficient professions of goodness without the Spirit: too many religions and not enough Christianity is the genius of the age.” (1st Ed S&H)
