Truth When You Need It

Thought control has an ominous sound to it, especially if it pertains to someone controlling another's thought! Thought control goes hand in hand with will-power.

"The hypnotist dispossesses the patient of his individuality in order to control him."  (S&H)

Interestingly, a search in this textbook (S&H) for the word "control," invariably assigns positive control to God, Life, Principle, Mind. So what is happening when I am trying to control my thinking? I give up my individuality! which is inextricably tied to divine Intelligence. If I give up my individuality, what is taking over? A self apart from God, which can appear loving or not, but in any case has no Principle controlling it, and therefore susceptible to the worst form of evil.

Most Christian Science practitioners are operating from this standpoint of thought control. This explains why there has been so little spiritual growth in the Christian Science community.

So how to have thought controlled without using human will? From the textbook:

"The only course is to take antagonistic grounds against all that is opposed to the health, holiness, and harmony of man, God's image."

"Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously."

"Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thought."

In these statements, we are aligning ourselves with divine Principle, not digging our heels in and trying to control our thought.
