The stereotype of a devout person is one kneeling in prayer and submission, one who faithfully adheres to the ritualistic observances of some religious system.
There is no hint of this image in the Sermon on the Mount, in fact we can surmise from Jesus' declaration, "except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven." that the highest "religious" model of behaviour simply does not cut it!
The following definition of devotion is far more satisfying and in line with Jesus' example:
The substance of all devotion is the reflection and
demonstration of divine Love, healing sickness and
destroying sin. Our Master said, "If ye love me, keep
my commandments."
One's aim, a point beyond faith, should be to find the
footsteps of Truth, the way to health and holiness. We
should strive to reach the Horeb height where God is re-
vealed; and the corner-stone of all spiritual building is
purity. (S&H)
Think of it! Each of us are in the business of healing sickness and destroying sin, no matter what occupation we may find ourselves in. This is the true way, totally practical.
