Is God peripheral?

It seems that too often God is associated with church, and perhaps morning or evening prayer, but not with much else.

For injustice, there is litigation. For anxiety or pain, there are doctors and drugs. For security, there is insurance. For unhappiness or boredom, there are plenty of addictive and self-destructive options,  etc.

So it is not surprising that for the most pressing concerns in our society today, crime, health care, opioids, poverty, etc., the general drift is to look anywhere else but God for solutions.

Those who condescendingly dismiss the subject of God as peripheral at best, might ask in light of today's headlines, "How is it working for us?" A litigious society where doctors, educators, lawyers, etc., are pressed to do the legally safe thing instead of doing the morally and professionally right thing; the one anxious or in pain is educated to look for a quick fix, and ignore the possible need for a change of lifestyle and so become enslaved by addiction, obesity, lousy disposition... ; the unhappy and bored end up addicted and perhaps incarcerated. With all the money and effort (more than ever in the history of mankind, by far!) poured into solving these problems, where are we?

God is love. Can we afford to make love a peripheral? God is the intelligence behind the universe. Can we rely on our own intelligence, denying a higher intelligence, and expect to dig ourselves out of the mess that our own intelligence caused in the first place?

The profound wisdom expressed by Jesus, to love God is equivalent to loving your neighbor as yourself:

To love God and not your neighbor is impossible.

To love God and not yourself is impossible.

To love your neighbor and not God is impossible.

To love your neighbor and not yourself is impossible.

To love yourself and not your neighbor is impossible.

To love yourself and not God is impossible.
