Materialism

  • Babylonish woman - gross materialism destroyed

In the reading from Revelation, the Babylonish woman is materialism and sensuality ripe for destruction, and it happens very quickly. In so many ways, it seems prophetic of what is ready to happen today in the world.  We would do well to listen, recognize the antidote, and embrace it.

  • Evolution of man a dangerous myth

Based upon the earliest Bible records, the heart of man has not evolved one iota over thousands of years. Job’s pride, shame, fear, self-righteousness, as well as his capacity for redemption, the materialism and sensualism of Sodom and Gomorrah - are these not characteristic of the modern man’s heart? Take any ancient Bible character, and you will find the same human heart that we are quite familiar with.

  • Ezekiel's prophecy for our time?

Today, the Prince of Tyrus, as described in Ezekiel, is alive and prospering, it would seem. In technology, medicine, politics, commerce, religion, etc. very ofter the inference is "I am God." These readings address the issue, and explain why the prophecy is inevitable.

  • Getting rid of storage units and obesity

There is a growing awareness that collecting “stuff” is costly, even detrimental to health. Is it a coincidence that our country has become saturated with storage units at the same time that obesity has become epidemic? The Bible admonition, “God requireth that which is past” could very well be the answer to the rampant obesity.

  • How might "I am God" creep in?

    TEXT:

In the Christian Era you had matter to meet as your mind. In the Christian Science Era you had malicious mental malpractice to meet as malicious argument and everything coming to you as hypnotic suggestion. Today, as the "Last Days," you have the culmination of all evil, but not as matter or argument to be refuted, but as actually, the presumptuous claim, that you are God, very Mind Itself. This last infirmity of sin, this iniquitous blasphemy cannot be met with arguments, it can only be met with pure realization, being lost completely in the Allness of Mind. (p. 994, CCT, H. W. Eustace)

    DISCUSSION:

How might the presumptious claim enter in in the practice of CS? Elsewhere?

  • How much do you practise Truth?

"The thunder of Sinai and the Sermon on the Mount are pursuing and will overtake the ages, rebuking in their course all error and proclaiming the kingdom of heaven on earth. Truth is revealed. It needs only to be practised." (S&H)  (emphasis added)

  • Intangible less real is back-assward

An idea or thought is intangible is it not? And yet it precedes an invention, an action, etc.

Our soul, our spirit, our love, clearly intangible - noone has ever found physical evidence for them, maybe for their effect, but not for them. We could go on and on about the very essence of our being...

  • Is food really the problem?

Is it not worth noticing that the more attention society gives to the food we eat, the more unhealthy society becomes? The statistics are staggering regarding increasing obesity and its effects.

Why has the wisdom of Jesus' teaching been totally ignored? "There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile a man."

  • Reversing the false testimony

TEXTS  (from the textbook)"Divine Science reverses the false testimony of the material senses, and thus tears away the foundations of error. Hence the enmity between Science and the senses, and the impossibility of attaining perfect understanding till the errors of sense are eliminated."

"Only by the illumination of the spiritual sense, can the light of understanding be thrown upon this Science, because Science reverses the evidence before the material senses and furnishes the eternal interpretation of God and man."

EXERCISE:Bring a specific example of this in your own experience. Identify the false testimony, then reverse it. A reading selection or two is also welcome, but be sure the emphasis is on your own experience.

  • Studying to unlearn - progressive mistakes

This session on very short notice brought forward some pretty profound stuff - the recording includes just the highlights:

    1. Finding revelation while sorting through the Christmas materialism - relating it to studying in order to listen better.

    2. An answer to a tough question re studying - Mrs. Glover (Eddy) in 1871, prior to writing Science and Health, describes the process of studying as necessary only to unlearn the misconceptions. It's a deep read, but is consistent with the Bible declaration "And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest." (Jeremiah/Hebrews)

    3. From "Spiritual Footsteps", Chapter 24), the point is made that mistakes made as a result of striving to listen for God's guidance are progressive/bring spiritual growth, much to be preferred over striving to get it right based upon the human mind.

  • Subject: Location of Kingdom of God

    TEXT:

"The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you." (Luke 17)

    DISCUSSION:

    1. Location - "within you" - define "you"

    2. When you travel, where does that leave the Kingdom of God?

    3. Can anything separate us from it?

  • Supremacy of Spirit today

    TEXTS from S&H:

"From beginning to end, the Scriptures are full of
accounts of the triumph of Spirit, Mind, over matter."

"The central fact of the Bible is the superiority of spiritual over physical power."

"It is only by acknowledging the supremacy of Spirit, which annuls
the claims of matter, that mortals can lay off mortality and
find the indissoluble spiritual link which establishes man forever in the divine likeness, inseparable from his creator."

"There will be greater mental opposition to the spiritual, scientific meaning of the Scriptures than there has
ever been since the Christian era began."

    DISCUSSION:

    1. Bring an example from the Bible of "the triumph of Spirit, Mind, over matter." Identify any sacrifice of material things behind the example.

    2. Bring an example from your own experience.

    3. Bring an example of where you failed to acknowledge the supremacy of Spirit in your own experience.

    4. Why might there be such "mental opposition to the spiritual, scientific meaning of the Scriptures"?

  • The status quo is always wrong

Status quo is a locked-in position. It disposes of humility as it builds walls around its territory to defend itself. It is non-intelligent because it relies on prior thinking that has been deemed correct and simply parrots it. It is blasphemous in that it denies the Infinite, and denies His reflection (no room for reflection in state quo!!).

  • Thumbs down to fashionable idolatry

It is apparent that Jesus' audience was past the point of worshipping golden calves, but in the Sermon on the Mount he did address other forms of idolatry (placing more importance on material things than on the Principle of being): financial assets, obsessing about food and/or clothing.

  • What is our end game?

"EVERY step of progress is a step more spiritual." Who said that? Does it matter who said it? Could there be a more pristine statement, assuming that death is not our goal in life? Surely it would be progress to get to know our Maker better, to more ably fulfill what He made us for?! A step more spiritual - would it be safe to say, more in line with Spirit, God? - more universal in one's love? less enamored by material, temporal things?
