Anybody who believes they can grow spiritually by studying and being a good person in the eyes of their fellow-man, is deluded. This was hardly the path of the Wayshower! See Gethsemane glorified - session Comments.
As we strive to listen and obey our Maker (though unpopular with our fellow-man!), we overcome unpleasant experiences, not by looking for the whys and the wherefores, nor by trying to escape the unpleasantness, but by recognizing that they are not of God. They are "the exalting ordeal of sin's revenge on its destroyer," in line with the Beatitude, "Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
From this disposition we overcome adversity rather than escape it, and step by step rise above our "human destiny" into our rightful heritage as a son or daughter of God.
