Required Christian attitude in approaching Science:
"My dear Students: Guard your tongues. When you see sin in others, know that you have it in yourselves, and become repentant. If you think you are not mortal, you are mistaken..." (Mary Baker Eddy, Rebuke to her followers when they came to see her by the thousands)
DAILY PRAYER
"Let your prayer be daily: reveal to me, Oh God, my secret faults, every error, every sin. Earnestly desire to know thyself, to have thy heart searched, to let thyself be humbled, and the man of God stand revealed. Never for one instant say, “Thank God, I am not as other men.” There is no I. If you are a personality, you are as other men; but if you are the idea of God, there is but one I, God." (from Watches, Prayers and Arguments)
Explanation:
"The manifestation of God through mortals is as light passing through the window-pane. The light and the glass never mingle, but as matter, the glass is less opaque than the walls. The mortal mind through which Truth appears most vividly is that one which has lost much materiality — much error — in order to become a better transparency for Truth. Then, like a cloud melting into thin vapor, it no longer hides the sun." (S&H)
Examples of materiality to be lost:
Self-awareness - to be seen of men - instead of to be God-conscious, manifest as a desire to do His will despite what others may think.
Self-satisfaction seeking - a perpetual desire to please one's self (sensuality) - instead of being sensitive to the needs of others - the Golden Rule.
Pride - the greatest impediment to letting the light shine through, the most insidious, the least recognized in one's self. The relinquishment of pride comes through a deep desire to know God better, but it does not come on our terms! It has been described as similar to the burning off of the dross in the purification process of gold.
