The matter illusion - glass half empty

"Is the glass half empty, or half full?" The answer to this proverbial question is said to indicate a pessimistic or an optimistic perspective. We offer another angle. Perceiving the glass half-empty is the material view, which my definition is limited by what can be perceived. The glass half-full perception "sees" beyond the physical to the unseen potential, in a sense a spiritual view. In the first case, the subject is restricted by a matter illusion, while in the second, the door is open to many possibilities.

Jesus' parable of the talents makes a similar point. The two who invested the talents they received, made more and were rewarded. The third who hid his talent for fear of losing it was punished.

This illustrates what is meant by the matter illusion - whatever instills a sense of limitation and fear. We should never settle for limitation and fear.

A far more expansive outlook: "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth." (Ps. 121)
