Humility costly but brings true security

Humility brings far more security than any financial investments or insurance policies, but it costs a lot! It costs us our pride of life.

Humility does not come through being passive. The Bible adjures us: “(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;”

“Strong holds… every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God” - is not this the pride that impedes our access to God? When we are so full of ourselves, it makes it very difficult to hear, to feel, God’s guidance, God’s love, even to follow Christ. If we are awake, we are acutely aware of how vulnerable we are in this state and will desire above all to be free of what is holding us back. This is where self-immolation is required, and it can sometimes feel as though a substance (pride!?) is being burned up! It may come as a hard experience that seems unfair, but it is actually Love’s annihilation of some enslaving pride.

Now, to the one who is oblivious to his helplessness without God, whose pride of life is so entrenched, the Bible warns: “Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.” It is this state of thought which hated and still hates Christ Jesus. Why? Because “The pride of priesthood is the prince of this world. It has nothing in Christ. Meekness and charity have divine authority.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy)

Humility is exemplified by Jesus’ statement: “I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me.” And finally, Paul: “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.” There is no more secure place on earth.
