Greatest desire - a holy thing

“One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.” (Ps 27)

The Psalmist expresses this beautiful sentiment after declaring that God is his light, salvation, and strength of his life, and so he is confident he has nothing to fear, no matter what the world may throw at him! But make no mistake about it. The “house of the Lord” is not referring to a life after death experience, for in the next verse, he is reassured that in the time of trouble, He will hide him in His pavilion.

Where is this “house of the Lord”? I think it is safe to say that Jesus’ explanation to the Pharisees as to when the kingdom of God should come applies here:
“The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 22)

And what is this “house of the Lord”? I don’t think you need to go further than “the consciousness of Love.” (Mary Baker Eddy)

As we acknowledge God, Love, in our daily goings, we abide in this house - and the more we live it, the more we are able behold the beauty of the Lord in the world around us, to inquire in His temple when we need guidance.

Notice, however, in case one is tempted to think this is a pollyanna kind of thing: “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after.” This is a heart that is done with all the the world’s promises:

“It is the spiritualization of thought and Christianization of daily life, in contrast with the results of the ghastly farce of material existence; it is chastity and purity, in contrast with the downward tendencies and earthward gravitation of sensualism and impurity, which really attest the divine origin and operation of Christian Science." (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy)

Note that "Christianization" and "Christian Science" as referred to here have nothing to do with a church or even a reiigious doctrine, but only to do with man and his individual relationship with his Maker as expressed by the Psalmist, and demonstrated most practically by Christ Jesus.
