In our last post, we marvelled at the wonder of God's creation. The thinker will be quick to say: "Yeah, but what about the depravity of man? Why did God enable/allow evil?" Seeking the answer to the origin of evil is typified by the bottomless pit, no different than seeking the explanation/origin of 2+2=5. It leads nowhere! The explanations of most theologians are weak at best, because their reasoning is based upon a false premise, that God and evil co-exist, as per Genesis 2/Adam, etc., and they ignore Genesis 1 as the final creation, complete, "very good," without any reference whatsoever to evil.
The revelation of Mary Baker Eddy, shaking the foundations of all Christian theology to date, was that Jesus Christ operated from the standpoint of the Genesis 1 explanation of creation, not Genesis 2/Adam, etc.! And this enabled him to heal as he did, and ultimately to overcome death. His premise was that God, Spirit, is good and only good. He dismissed evil, sin, disease and death as illegitimate because they have nothing in God. If the language of his teaching seemed otherwise at times, it was to meet the thought of his hearers where they were. The underlying premise remained the same, and this is why Mrs. Eddy used the term Science to describe it.
Today, it is said that the positive thinking theme of so many self-help systems has its origin in Mrs. Eddy's revelation. There is no doubt that it is better than dwelling on the negative, but it falls far short of the requirement of Mrs. Eddy's revelation:
"Dost thou 'love the Lord thy God with all thy
heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind'?
This command includes much, even the sur-
render of all merely material sensation, affec-
tion, and worship. This is the El Dorado of Christianity.
It involves the Science of Life, and recognizes only
the divine control of Spirit, in which Soul is our master,
and material sense and human will have no place." (S&H)
