"It were better to be exposed to every plague on earth than to endure the cumulative effects of a guilty conscience. The abiding consciousness of wrong-doing tends to destroy the ability to do right.” (S&H) Pretty strong stuff!
Whether family, church, political movement, or God Himself, same difference. If we are made to feel guilty and we live with it, we are stripped of our moral integrity. The textbook continues: "If sin is not regretted and is not lessening, then it is hastening on to physical and moral doom. You are conquered by the moral penalties you incur and the ills they bring.”
However, the sin causing the guilt in the case of family, church, or political movement is personal sense, a Godless sense, and is the stuff of mental tyranny, the guilty conscience designed to control you. On the other hand, the sin of departing from divine Principle, the laws of the universe, and the ensuing guilty conscience, is "the design of Love to reform the sinner.” - to free from the enslavement of self-destructive behavior.
How important to discern the difference between the influence of personal sense vs enforcement of divine Principle/Love! "God has endowed man with inalienable rights, among which are self-government reason, and conscience. Man is properly self-governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love.” (S&H)
