Based upon the earliest Bible records, the heart of man has not evolved one iota over thousands of years. Job’s pride, shame, fear, self-righteousness, as well as his capacity for redemption, the materialism and sensualism of Sodom and Gomorrah - are these not characteristic of the modern man’s heart? Take any ancient Bible character, and you will find the same human heart that we are quite familiar with.
To illustrate why the assumption that the man has evolved is dangerous, there has been more tyranny, murder and mayhem in the last century than at any other time in the history of mankind, and yet there are those who believe the American Constitution, designed to protect against tyranny, is out-dated, because “Tyranny could never happen here, today.”
Okay, but what of the coming of Christ, and the revelation of Christian Science? Surely these have brought progress. ONLY SO FAR AS THEY HAVE BEEN EMBRACED BY MAN. The human heart that turns away from God, Principle/Love, is susceptible to the same old garbage, the depravity of man. Why? Because it becomes increasingly naive about the workings of the unbridled human heart.
“We have not the power to demonstrate what we do not understand. But the human self must be evangelized. This task God demands us to accept lovingly to-day, and to abandon so fast as practical the material, and to work out the spiritual which determines the outward and actual."
"If you venture upon the quiet surface of error and are in sympathy with error, what is there to disturb the waters? What is there to strip off error's disguise?"
"If you launch your bark upon the ever-agitated but healthful waters of truth, you will encounter storms. Your good will be evil spoken of. This is the cross. Take it up and bear it, for through it you win and wear the crown. Pilgrim on earth, thy home is heaven; stranger, thou art the guest of God." (S&H)
